Outdoor Learning

The outdoor environment at Montessori Weaver School was planned and developed with the same care and preparation as the indoor space.  Wooden hive structures, trees, and logs provide opportunities for climbing and the large fenced-in area gives the children a chance to run and play. A pavilion offers shade and a wonderful outdoor classroom on pleasant days.

The children spend time in the garden, which they plant with seasonal fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Sometimes they stop on the way to the playground to harvest a leaf of lettuce, kale, or spinach. Other days they visit the garden to create a flower arrangement for their classroom. The children help care for the garden, and older students keep journals of their observations there.

The chickens that are housed at the end of the playground enjoy visits from the students who feed them blades of grass through the wire. A natural approach to everything in the MWS outdoor environment makes it a place where the students can exercise, imagine, and be creative.  It’s a place where friendships grow and a deep love for nature is formed.

“There must be provision for the child to have contact with nature, to understand and appreciate the order, the harmony, and the beauty in nature.”
